Final Crit

Strengths:

. Well documented design process
. Good analysis of film material
. Vast info based research
. Thorough documentation
. Suitability of tone of voice
. Audio & type work well together

Weaknesses:

. Colour used doesn't reflect existing material
. Logo goes un-noticed
. White type and White background makes it feel empty
. Little kinetic typography research
. Links from research to design direction not clear enough
. Little critical awareness of secondary material
. Not a lot of experimentation with the type motion graphics

Actions to take from this:

. Simplify and make clear my design directions and rationale
. Add to existing research into kinetic type videos
. Create and experiment variations with the kinetic typography
. Look into the use of lighting within AE to create depth and lose the overwhelming 'vectorish' image
. Experiment with colour
. Play with logo, referring to point made on crit feedback sheet
. Play around and tweek with the ending of the idents, focusing on the smooth transition from quote to logo
. Experiment with type being bolder by the use of a stroke.

5 Questions

. Are my videos too simple?

. Is the style i have used suitable & relevant to the subject?

. Would my idents benefit from having the context of a channel within them?

. Is there a weak spot within my Design Process?

. Does my design process show logical thought towards creative decisions?

Movie Season

Final Idents /// So far...

Movie Season

Animation 5 /// Semi Pro

Screen shots again, had some more trouble with the audio on this one, background music on the quote is quite dominant so needed something similar, i chose a cover of Metallica's One by Korn, just to cover the first second or two, then finishing with a song from the film performed by Will himself, Jackie moon, Love Me Sexy.

Here are the videos for the 5th animation, the first being nearly done just without the final title popping up. Im happy with the result, however i plan to leave it for  day listen again because i think the audio of the video may have to be tweeked a little more.

The latter video, is the final point i took it too, again sound may have to be tweeked! Other than that i quite like it, i think the music ends well on this video and i think this has the best transition in from the quote to the title of the film.

Movie Season

Animation 4 /// Talladega Nights

Some screens shots through my progress, this was the hardest yet, i re-designed the original assets a tad, to improve it obvs, but yeah, the sound on this mp3 was awkard to work with as it is quite quiet and therefore its wave length is hard to design by, getting the timings with the quote was a bit of a struggle...

For this ident i again chose an extra bit of audio in the form of a song from the film, i chose, Cochise by Audioslave, a heavy rock song which suits the whole subject of the film (racing, cars), also a good beat and riff to play with, the first video is just trying things out with the timing of the song with the quote within the 10 seconds...

And the above being a mostly finished video! Might have to be tweaked in a few places though,

Audio Choices

From starting to create my videos and coming to a near finished result with some of them, i found that i wanted to add extra audio other than the quote itself.
My reason being is that the video would either start silent or end silent which i didnt like and isn't very professional in terms of existing idents.
So i have chosen to use songs from the selected film for each ident. All of the films mostly have a really good soundtrack, with the majority of them being American rock & late 70's music.
Also with using songs from the actual films it gives it a bit more authenticity and the audience should be able to recognize the song if they have seen the films before.

So far i have chosen...

Anchorman - Treat her like a lady, The Cornelious Brothers

I chose this purely because the quote i used for the ident has the song already playing in the background.

Step Brothers - A-Punk, Vampire Weekend

I chose this song as it is from the film, its quick paced and cheerful! Which goes well with the pace of the quote and the subject of the ident.

Blades of Glory - The Stroke, Billy Squier

This is the song that Ferrell's character first ice skates too, its loud, in your face and catchy, suiting the film and chosen quote. BOOM!

The other video songs to follow...

Animation Three /// Anchorman

Some more screen shots of me working on the animations within After Effects.
Each of the idents is fairly similar in style, so after the first video i made its become a lot easier as i am repeating some of the motion graphics from the first video. The hard part comes really with the audio, as with this ident, the quote has music already playing in the background, which i found didnt work well with another song underneath it, so i found what song was in the quote and did my best to cut it down so it sounds as though the song is carrying on through after the quote had finished.
What else i found with this video is that the quote was just over 10 seconds, so i had to firstly miss out the first word which was "Mmmmm.." i dont think its hindered the rest of the quote thankfully, i also had to cut down a pause in the middle of the quote, so instead of one audio bar to play with i had two for the quote itself and one for the added song.

Here are the videos that i produced firstly for this quote, The first is without any extra audio...

And the second has the extra audio plus i had to re-sync the words to the quote just a little...
