Brief Two

NDNR

Some more ideas and development for one of the record labels. NDNR (No Dice No Risk) is the label for the DJ's. After talking to josh other week and showing him my first initial ideas and designs he said he wants the record label to look quite professional / minimal specifically looking at the Helvetica designs I did.
Keeping this in mind I tried to develop the Helvetica designs but to no avail, from here came up with a few different ideas, relating to some research and context that I've recently blogged. Context.

I'm not happy with any of these ideas to be honest, struggling with this one a bit. Think I need to assess the label again, what it stands for, keeping in mind what Josh has told me. Also researching more into logo's as a whole. Plan, get a book from the library full of logos and just see whats crackin'.

Brief Two

Client Communication

By the power of Facebook I sent my designs and colour experiment to Tigger, asked for his feedback, whether he liked the design firstly and then what colour schemes he liked.

Feedback was good, and he gave a straight-forward answer for the colour, orange on black. He's happy, I'm happy.
As I said the design still needs a little tweaking in parts, make it more even, but as it is in the final stage I will pick up some of the other logos and get them to the same level as this.

Brief Two

This is the digital version of the drawing, experimenting with colour, trying various combinations seeing what compliments and works together.
My favourites are, white on orange, white on green and cream on blue. However the white on green connotes irish, which is a shame as Tigger can often be found wearing a green & white New Era. The cream on blue works really well I believe however that reminds me of ice cream soda which has no relevance here. The white on orange however doesn't connote anything none relevant, and Tigger is ginger. Win / win situation.
However I want leave the choice of colour up to Tigger himself, treating him as a proper client. If he chooses one of the options below that I think are a little weak or certain schemes that I think don't necessarily work / connote non relevant things I shall merely inform him of these and see if he changes his mind.

Brief Two

Went back to working on the logo for 1 of the 4 DJ's, Tigger. I thought I had a pretty good idea for the logo, so drew a finalised version of this (2) but from recent research and some typography designs that I found I tried out a new idea (3). Taking inspiration from some Baseball related designs.

1.2.

3.
Out of the two ideas I felt the new design was much better suited to Tigger as it is more fun and lighthearted, matching the person and the energy of the music he plays. Im not throwing the previous design away as I may use it for one the of the other DJ's.
From here I developed the drawing, changing little bits and playing with the backdrop / border.

4.
5.
6.
Having a border / stroke design above, or bold backdrop below.
Took some consideration and asked people around the studio on what they felt would work better. Got told that there is a slight danger with using a thin border as when made small (say on a business card) the logo will lose a lot of boldness. Aswell as this I just preferred the backdrop design as it makes it a lot bolder, standing out from anything else.
Developed this further, tweaking small bits and bobs.

7.
8.
9.
10.
11.
Finally coming to the above image, still needs some slight tweaking in parts I feel, but it is in a strong enough state for me to go away and digitalise this and then get feedback from Josh (record label owner) and Tigger himself.

List

Where I'm at, where I'm going, what I need to do...

Doing these to help me easily see where I'm at with each brief, what I need to do next and the like.

Crit Feedback

Generally the crit went fairly well, I feel I prepared well showing some strong development in one of my briefs. However I was concerned with the progress of my other briefs as I don't feel I'm as far as I should be with them.

From the formative feedback sheet:

Problem Analysis

- I have a good understanding of my deliverables and target audiences, also an 'excellent' documentation of work.
However I need to commit to specific outcomes for my other briefs as I have done with my first brief (Most progressed brief). Notably my second brief, visual identity for a record label. I have specific outcomes, the 6 logos and a proposed website but I also have business card and 'appropriate stationary', It is this that I really need to pin down and specify exactly what I intend to produce.

Contextual Understanding

- Good range of research, clear interest.

Design Development

- Good exploration within second brief (record label) however it is time to focus in on the better ideas, ones with more potential and develop them further coming to an end point!

Additional Comments

Concerning my first and most developed brief. When designing the rest of my illustrations build the body of work up evenly. Instead of building each illustration to a finished point and moving to the next drawing. Do all the drawings at the same time, then vectorise them together etc

Discussion

Gave a chance to go over the feedback given and go into more detail, and for me to ask questions...

. Came up that I need to organise and tag my blog a bit better, making it easier to navigate through the work.

. I need to decide on atleast one competition brief, even if I just pick a few up and do one a day.

. Need to experiment with how to present board designs, whether using Photoshop to digitally place it on a board etc

. Also play with stickers, vinyl or white paper - from asked question.

. Came up that I should find out where and who prints onto boards, would it be possible for me to go visit or even have a few day placement. Good start for some research.

. Been told to get rid of the big drips on the front board design.

. Also advised to look into existing boards but specifically looking at when they use the same image on the front and bottom of the board, see how its been done, what is possible etc

. Told to work on text on label, change Futura, consider leading and choice of case.

Few things to work on, time to make a list bitch.

Brief One

Printing

Did some nice prints, something I haven't done in a while.
Printed a simple presentation board of my designs, logos and the snowboard itself.
Selection of stickers, the label sticker for the board and a double sided poster print.
All this preparing me for my crit.

Web Worksop

Found this week quite difficult. Seemed to go quite fast and a lot of the stuff went over my head.
Went into the session with my proposed website design which I thought was fairly simple however it slowly seemed harder to re-create as the workshop went on.
Firstly I used Photoshop to create the mock up with all the assets and it seemed as though I should have created it in Illustrator, all on seperate layers. So I fell behind from there.
Learnt a few things though,

. When working for web, have all the assets saved out separately , making sure each asset has a tight frame.
. Save each button twice, one normally and the other saved out to be what it looks like when selected / rolled over.
. Have all measurements down. Each asset, specific sizes (frame)
. Save assets as PNG, making sure they have a quick loading time for web. (Save for web & device)
. Have all colour codes down and specified.

A few things I found from the session,

. I can't have the colour I originally chose as it isn't web-safe apparently. Yet to find a similar one, I think its because the colour I chose was a tone of a colour, well had an opacity setting of 10%.
. As the workshop went on I found that I didn't want to include a lot of coded design, in terms of writing out the copy in Dreamweaver, instead it would all be images / assets. This way I could have any colour and more importantly any typeface I want.
The problem with this is that my site won't be web searchable. As it is the copy put directly into Dreamweaver that something like google uses to find sites. To counter this I came up with inserting the same text as I have in the asset, say the about me section,
'Graphic designer, from Leeds' or something! But yeah inserting this but as the same colour as the background so you cant see it but still web-searchable! This however causes another problem! Having floating things on top of each other. This is possible Simon told me but I've no idea how to do so at the moment.

.Gosh web is confusing!

What I want...

What I came out with...

Very, very, very slowly getting there.

Brief four

Came up with another brief relating to the Snowbombing festival. Another promotional campaign, this time taking advantage of their sponsor, Metro.
The brief being to create a series of cover-wraps for the metro promoting the festival. The concept of this being to use quotes from reviews in the media, ranging from artists and media companies such as MTV.
Here a few quick ideas for the cover wraps, kind of style, etc.

Brief One

Finalised designs for the first illustration...

Logo's & Snowboard;

(NEED TO CHANGE THE BOARD, ADDING THE K2 LOGO W/ TYPE)

Double-Sided Poster;
Label / Packaging;
